Abu Dhabi Golf Club continues to impress
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship has cemented itself as a firm favourite amongst players
The ‘Gulf Swing’, which kicks off at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, is now one of the most exciting
periods of the European Tour schedule. The immaculately conditioned course managed by Troon Golf consistently draws in the world’s most in demand and best golfers each year.
Now one of the European Tour’s most established events, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship has cemented itself as a firm favourite amongst players. This year, the likes of the world’s number one and two players, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, the current U.S Open champion Martin Kaymer, American sensation Rickie Fowler and French world number 14 Victor Dubuisson all made the cut. No less than eight major winners were in the field.
Huge crowds enjoyed a thrilling 10th anniversary edition of the tournament played in typically perfect conditions. Three-time winner of the event Martin Kaymer lead after each of the first three days thanks to some faultless golf and took a six shot lead into the final round.
Gary Stal stormed through the field on the Sunday, holding off several of the Ryder Cup contingent including the world number one, to lift the Falcon Trophy and take home almost €380,000. His final round included seven birdies, four of which came around the turn.
Remarkably, Stal managed to keep bogeys off his card throughout the final round on the way to a joint best of the day 65 strokes as the 22-year old jumped over 250 places in the world rankings.
